PROBLEMS (2)

The Meaning of Percent

Do the problem yourself first!

15.  a)  In a survey, 54 out of 100 people responded Yes.  What percent
15.  a)  responded Yes?  54%

15.  b)  100 students were tested, and 36 got A.  What percent
15.  b)  got A?  36%

15.  c)  Jackie had \$100 and spent \$12.50 for lunch? What percent of her 15.  b)  \$100 did she spend for lunch?  12.5%

16.  How much is 100% of \$34?  \$34!

17.  How much is 1% of each of the following?  Place the decimal point.

 a)  \$800  \$8.00 b)   \$4000  \$40.00 c)  \$370  \$3.70 d)  \$375   \$3.75 e)   \$65  \$.65 f)  \$5.00  \$.05

18.  a)  How much is 1% of \$600?  \$6.00

18.  b)  How much is 2% of \$600?  \$12.00

18.  c)  How much is 3%?  \$18.00

18.  d)  How much is 11%?  \$66.00

19.  How much is 8% of \$900?  \$72

20.  How much is 10% of each of the following.  Place the decimal point.

 a)  \$800   \$80 b)   \$4000  \$400 c)  \$370  \$37 d)  \$375   \$37.50 e)   \$65  \$6.50 f)  \$5.00  \$.50

21.  a)  How much is 10% of \$90?  \$9.00

20.  b)  How much is 20% of \$90?  \$18

20.  c)  How much is 30%?  \$27

20.  d)  How much is 80%?  \$72

22.  How much is 90% of \$70?  \$63

23.  You invest \$4,000 in a fund that earns 10% interest on the total at the
24.  end of each year.  If you leave your money in the fund and do not
24.  touch it, then at the end of two years, how much money will you
24.  have?

\$4,840.  For, at the end of the first year, you will have earned 10%, or \$400, in interest, so that you now have \$4,000 + \$400 = \$4,400.  At the end of the second year, 10% of that is \$440. You now have \$4,400 + \$440 = \$4,840.

That is called compound interest; interest on the interest.

24.  Change each percent to a number.  Divide by 100.

 25 a)  14%  = .14 b)  .14% = .0014 25 c)  39% = .39 d)  .39% = .0039 25 e)  8% = .08 f)  .8% = .008 25 g)  5% = .05 h)  .05% = .0005 25 i)  2.6% = .026 j)  78.9% = .789 25 k)  750% = 7.5 l)  2000% = 20 25 m)  900% = 9 n)  265% = 2.65 25 o)  120% = 1.2 p)  5.28% = .0528

25.  Change each number to a percent.  Multiply by 100.

 24 a)  .68 = 68% b)  .34 = 34% 24 c)  7.2 = 720% d)  .694 = 69.4% 24 e)  .085 = 8.5% f)  6 = 600% 24 g)  15 = 1500% h)  3.28 = 328% 24 i)  12.5 = 1,250% j)  10 = 1000%
